On-Stage and in Conversation

The One Conversation That Changes Everything

There’s a moment before every breakthrough that no one sees.

It doesn’t happen on stage.
It doesn’t happen in a boardroom.
It doesn’t happen when the applause begins.

It happens in silence.
It happens in reflection.
It happens… in the mirror.

When I first delivered “Your Interview with the Mirror” across South Africa, I noticed something fascinating. The room would start with polite attention—but somewhere along the way, it would shift. People would stop listening… and start reflecting.

Because this talk was never really about me.
It was about them confronting themselves.

The Question That Changes Everything

In the speech, I ask a simple question:

“If you were interviewing yourself for your own life… would you hire you?”

That question lands hard.

Because most people prepare extensively for interviews with others, but never for the most important one of all: the interview with themselves.

We prepare CVs for companies.
We study job specs.
We rehearse answers.

But when it comes to life?

We improvise.

Why This Talk Matters

The core idea behind this speech, and my book The Contract with Yourself, is simple:

“A contract binds you to a result. What if you signed one with yourself?”

This is where everything changes.

Because once you stop negotiating with yourself…
You start honouring yourself.

And that’s when:

  • Your decisions become clearer
  • Your actions become consistent
  • Your identity becomes stronger

The Realisation Most People Avoid

During the talk, I guide audiences through the acronym C.O.N.T.R.O.L a framework for self-leadership.

But before any of that lands, there’s a deeper truth:

“It is difficult to lead others if you cannot first lead yourself.”

That line often creates a pause in the room.

Because leadership is not a title.
It’s a relationship—with yourself first.

What This Means for You

If you’re feeling:

  • Stuck in someone else’s version of success
  • Busy but unfulfilled
  • Clear on what to do… but not doing it

Then maybe it’s time to stop looking outward, and start asking better inward questions.
