Awareness Precedes Greatness: The Skill Most Leaders Avoid

If there is one principle that underpins transformation, it is this:

“Awareness precedes greatness.”

Yet, most people avoid it.

Why?

Because awareness requires honesty.
And honesty requires courage.

The 3 Levels of Awareness

In the speech, I break awareness into three powerful layers:

1. Self-Acceptance

Not blame. Not justification.
“This is my reality. What will I do about it?”

2. Self-Belief

Your internal voice must be stronger than external noise.

3. Self-Reflection

The ability to zoom out and see your life objectively.

The Airplane Analogy

One of the most memorable moments in the talk is this:

“On the ground, you see problems. From 10,000 feet… everything looks in balance.”

That’s perspective.
And perspective changes decisions.

Failure That Taught Me More Than Success

I share a story about failing a key CIMA exam.

I could have blamed circumstances.
I could have justified the result.

But instead, I chose acceptance.

A year later, I was teaching that very exam… and helping over 100 students pass.

The Truth Most People Resist

Awareness is uncomfortable because it removes excuses.

But it also gives you something powerful:

Control.

Reflection Question

Are you:

  • Observing your life… or reacting to it?
  • Taking ownership… or assigning blame?
